The Cultural Currency Behind NYFW

Twice a year, in September and February, the world’s most influential fashion houses showcase their latest collections during a week filled with runway shows and events. Generating roughly $887 million annually and attracting approximately 230,000+ in-person attendees, NYFW commands attention on and off the runway. The sheer coverage of the event means OOH serves as a powerful stage for fashion brands, providing mass reach and high visibility and connecting brands with trendsetters and fashion insiders in real time.

OOH Generates Buzz Ahead of Official NYFW Events

OOH advertising connects ad viewers to real-life fashion experiences where they can engage with the newest apparel on the market, bridging the gap between on-the-street placements and in-person activations, as well as reaching attendees across the city. JCDecaux advertisers, including Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, and Khaite, extended their official events with OOH, bringing their brand to audiences who may not have been in the room or on the runway. Brands not hosting during Fashion Week also had the opportunity to tap into the broader cultural moment, align with the prestige of NYFW, and leverage the unmissable buzz throughout the city.

OOH Targets Flagship Retail Hotspots

JCDecaux’s premium street furniture advertising along 5th Avenue, 57th Street, Madison Avenue, and in SoHo and the Meatpacking District attracts a built-in population with an affinity for designer clothing and accessories. These high-impact placements reinforce the association with brick-and-mortar retail, hitting luxury audiences in the locations where they typically spend money.

More accessible fashion brands like Levi’s also leverage JCDecaux’s premium networks, prioritizing placements in key retail districts where proximity to points of sale can convert brand awareness into action. Beyond retail, OOH allows brands to target key dining and leisure destinations surrounding Fashion Week events where audiences are spending their time. By penetrating the corners of the city where fashion industry leaders, consumers, and stakeholders are most active, brands can position themselves at the center of the NYFW experience.

Research Reveals the Impact of Luxury Apparel OOH

Research from The Harris Poll demonstrates the ability of OOH to drive meaningful engagement with luxury apparel brands. Among audiences who saw a luxury apparel OOH ad, 86% engaged, with 49% visiting the brand’s website, 31% following the brand on social media, and 24% purchasing a product at a retail location. This means that not only does OOH set the stage for exposure; it prompts engagement with the brands consumers see in the real world. Additionally, 66% say OOH ads in iconic or high traffic locations would influence their opinion of a brand or product, meaning that high impact placements play a key part in ensuring positive brand perception.
